DISA approves 23 cloud providers for unclassified data

The Defense Information Systems Agency has granted provisional authorization for 23 cloud computing providers to offer Defense Department agencies services for their least sensitive data. The move continues DOD’s effort to make it easier for agencies to procure commercial cloud services.

The 23 providers are cleared to host information at Impact Level 2, the least sensitive of DOD’s four levels. Level 2 covers data cleared for public release, such as that on public-facing websites, as well as unclassified information on some private DOD sites. The other three impact levels—4, 5 and 6—reflect ascending levels of sensitivity, with Level 6 for data classified as Secret.

"The granting of these provisional authorizations is an important step in our strategy to drive cost down by moving more of our mission data to the cloud," DOD CIO Terry Halvorsen said in a statement.

DOD’s move to cloud computing has been hampered by security concerns and the difficulty vendors have had meeting DISA’s requirements. In January, DISA issued a new security requirements guide for cloud that abandoned the old Cloud Security Model, under which only a handful of vendors had achieved authorization, and adopted a model closer to the Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program used by other federal agencies.
