Navy to install data gateway on ships

The Office of Naval Research has created a “network bridging system” designed to move data between combat system that controls weapons and sensors and the command and control network on Navy ships, reports Defense News.

The Universal Gateway, which is intended for carriers, cruisers and destroyers and is scheduled to be deployed between fiscal 2013 and 2014, replaces a tedious manual process that involved copying data onto a CD and transferring it to a different network, the story said.

By eliminating the need for CDs, the network bridging system also will help make networks more secure, the story said.
