The Army's Nett Warrior program lives on at the third Network Integration Evaluation in the form of the highly touted smart phones that squad leaders are required to carry on the battlefield, reports Michael Hoffman at DOD Buzz blog.
At the NIE 12.2, which runs through June 9 at White Sands Missile Range, N.M., squad leaders are wearing Motorola Atrix smart phones inside a green case mounted to their chests, connected to Rifleman Radios on their backs, the story said. Although they can't make calls on their smart phones, the device gives them the ability to see friendly soldiers' locations, mark threats and enemy positions, and text each other.
Because of multiple problems related to requirements and cost, the Army canceled every part of the Nett Warrior program except the smart phones, the story said.
