DARPA wants small satellites to test fractionated concept

The Defense Advanced Research Project Agency wants bids from contractors capable of furnishing four small satellites that would be able to demonstrate its fractionated spacecraft architecture in orbit, reports Aviation Week.

DARPA plans a six-month, on-orbit demonstration of its System F6 program in the second half of 2015, the story said.

The System F6 program was established to develop technology that could distribute the functions of a large, expensive satellite across a cluster of more affordable satellites that would wirelessly share critical resources, such as computing and communications, the story said.
