The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff has selected 18 books for his “Chairman’s Professional Reading List” that he believes can help prepare personnel in all of the military services for the future through a personal course of reading, critical thought and reflection, the Defense Department said.
The list is intended to “deepen our understanding of the value and ethos of our military profession and services culture, to promote innovative thinking as we face a dynamic future, and to facilitate discussion on key issues we face as a military and a nation,” Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff said in publishing the list.
The list includes timeless treatises on military strategy by Sun Tsu, Antoine Henry Jomini and Carl von Clausewitz, biographies of famous American military commanders, such as George Washington and George C. Marshall, and important critiques on the challenges of 21st-century warfare.
