The Defense Department plans to test its Joint Information Environment (JIE) concept in the European Command this summer and will repeat the process in the Pacific Command afterward, said a top Navy official May 3, reports Federal News Radio.
“The trial proposes leveraging the successful [Defense Information Systems Agency] and Army joint enterprise networks by extending IP services and incorporating the JIE technical reference architecture to all DOD entities within the EUCOM claimancy,” Vice Adm. Harry Harris, assistant to the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said at AFCEA NOVA’s Naval IT Day in Vienna, Va.
The DOD hopes eventually that the JIE will, when fully implemented, offer a seamless end-to-end network based on a common architecture that will eliminate costly and inefficient information barriers among the military services and defense agencies, the story said.
