The Air Mobility Command (AMC) might purchase as many as 18,000 Apple iPads to replace paper charts and technical manuals used by its flight crews, reports NextGov.
The planned purchase is significant because it would be the largest single order by a federal entity for the table computer that is popular in the commercial marketplace but has experienced low government sales due to continuing security concerns, the story states.
In a notice posted on the Federal Business Opportunities website Feb. 2, the Air Force arm responsible for moving troops and equipment around the globe indicated it would buy “a minimum of 63 and a maximum of 18,000, iPad 2, Brand Name or Equal devices” for crews of its global transport aircraft, the story said. AMC officials subsequently emphasized that the command seeks a tablet device, and not necessarily an iPad.
