Special Forces plan social network hybrid app

The U.S. Special Operations Command (SOCOM) wants to create a voice-based social networking application that’s a hybrid of talk radio and Twitter, reports Noah Shachtman at Wired’s Danger Room blog.

SOCOM envisions a “user-generated social media radio application powered by the human voice, available on the PC, Mac, Android, iPhone, and Nokia smart phones, that lets users share their thoughts and experiences.”

“The command is investigating ideas and technologies that can replace traditional methods of information dissemination like face-to-face or handing out leaflets," SOCOM spokesman Col. Edward “Tim” Nye, told Danger Room.
