Military prepares MUOS satellite for February launch

Lockheed Martin has delivered the Navy’s first Mobile Uses Objective System (MUOS) satellite to Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Fla., in preparation for launch in February 2012 aboard an Atlas V launch vehicle, company officials said Dec. 16.

MUOS is a narrowband tactical satellite communications system designed to replace the existing Ultra High Frequency Follow-On system.

The next-generation MUOS constellation is designed for simultaneous voice, video and data transmission and will give warfighters 16 times the communications capability of existing satellites, the officials said.
