US military needs versatile weapons systems: JCS chairman

The U.S. military needs flexible, versatile weapons capable of handling multiple missions in the years ahead in light of soon-to-occur major defense spending reductions, said Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Martin Dempsey said, according to Defense News.

"What you really want coming down the assembly line is something that can turn out and be a Swiss Army knife, not a stiletto," Dempsey said in remarks directed at the defense industry during a Dec. 9 Atlantic Council event.

He said a comprehensive military strategy hammered out in the Defense Department is in place and will guide the more than $450 in cuts expected to occur over the next decade.
