Airborne radar sensor passes initial test

Sierra Nevada has successfully demonstrated the prototype of an airborne x-band radar sense-and-avoid sensor for unmanned aircraft vehicles, company officials said Nov. 16.

The electronic systems provider's Multi Sensor Detect Sense and Avoid technology, which represents an technical advance beyond electronically steered antennas, was able to repeatedly detect, track and avoid airborne obstacles during the test, they said.

The company plans to hold another demonstration in early 2012.
