Army tests 3G network to boost squad-level awareness

The Army has tested a 3G wireless network that would link smart phones, tablets and radio systems to a large number of sensors and unmanned ground and air vehicles to push information down to the squad and fire team leaders, reports Aviation Week.

The demonstration, which took place in early November at the Army Expeditionary Warrior Experiment at Fort Benning, Ga., is part of a concerted effort to put critical reconnaissance data into the hands of infantry squads.

The Army tested 46 technologies at the event, which officials describe as a "feeder event" to the larger Network Integration Evaluation exercise held at White Sands Missile Range, N.M.
