Tigershark UAV boasts two drones in one

The U.S. Special Operations Command will soon have a new type of unmanned aerial vehicle at its disposal, one that promises a two for one deal, reports Katie Drummond at Wired’s Danger Room blog.

Built through the Precision Acquisition and Weaponized System program, the Robotic Russian Doll of Death includes a miniature drone warhead designed to separate from the larger Tigershark surveillance and reconnaissance drone, enabling smaller, more accurate explosions and limiting collateral damage. In addition, the warhead drone has the capability to transmit real-time video to ground support before detonated, according to the blog.

If all goes well, the highly coveted mini drone will be headed for Afghanistan in late 2012.
