Technologically speaking, the distance between military and civilian life is not that far apart as can be seen from a string of innovations that the defense establishment has funded that have filtered their way into every-day use by civilians, reports Danger Room's Wired blog.

This list includes the computer mouse, hypertext, computer windows, Global Positioning System, microwave oven, cell phones, Google Earth and the Internet.

And that cool voice assistant named Siri that runs the iPhone 4S? The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency initially conceived its artificial-intelligence algorithms for data collection and organization that might help the military plan better, according to Danger Room.
