The Air Force Space Command says that the Operationally Responsive Space-1 satellite is now fully operational in the wake of successful on-orbit deployment and subsequent checkout of all systems, ATK, the maker of the spacecraft’s infrastructure, said Sept. 21.
ORS-1, launched in June from NASA’s facility at Wallops Island, Va., is the first satellite in the Defense Department’s ORS program tailored to support combatant command operations as an operational satellite.
Through the ORS program, DOD intends to quickly deploy a small satellite with sophisticated sensor technologies to furnish real-time support to commanders on the battlefield.
