Army places initial order for JTRS ground radios

Order represents first ground-domain radios to meet full suite of JTRS requirements

The Army has placed an initial production order with General Dynamics to deliver 6,250 Rifleman and 100 Manpack radios for use by soldiers at the tactical level, company officials said July 7.

The Joint Tactical Radio System Handheld, Manpack, Small Form Fit radios that will be provided through the $56.4 million order, which are the first JTRS radios to be distributed to ground troops that meet the program’s full requirements, will give soldiers secure mobile and networked communications, the company said.

The Army eventually might purchase as many as 190,000 Riflemen and 100 Manpack radios through the program, the company said.
