Military review ongoing, even as Gates is set to retire

Review of military's missions and capabilities won't be finished before defense secretary leaves

A White House-initiated review of the military’s missions and capabilities is not likely to be completed before Defense Secretary Robert Gates retires at the end of June, reports Defense News.

The Pentagon does not anticipate the comprehensive review being finalized until Gates’ replacement, Leon Panetta, currently CIA director, is confirmed, said Frank Kendall, principal deputy undersecretary of defense for acquisition, technology and logistics.

The Senate could hold Panetta’s confirmation hearing as early as June 7, Defense Department officials said.
