Mobile security specialist Fixmo Inc. will supply data protection and cyber security components for the Defense Department’s mobile device management and mobile app store initiatives.
Fixmo, Sterling, Va., said Nov. 13 it will work with Digital Management Inc. of Bethesda, Md., as part of a three-year, $16 million contract awarded in June 2013 by the Defense Information Systems Agency to manage mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets across the Defense Department. The DISA contract is the largest federal initiative so far aimed at securing mobile devices.
Fixmo said its technology will be used to secure mobile email and web browsing. It will also help ensure compliance with DISA mobile security guidelines. The DISA contract could cover as many as 300,000 DOD mobile users by 2016.
Fixmo said its mobile security technologies were developed under a cooperative research and development agreement with the National Security Agency. The company claims to be the first to offer a commercial product that meets DISA’s mobile security guidelines for Samsung and Apple iOS devices.
DISA’s mobile device management and mobile app store contract will be executed in increments. The agency awarded Digital Management Inc. a $2.9 million contract in June that extends through July 2014. The contract includes four six-month options that are expected to raise the contract value to about $16 million.
