Defense Department CIO Teri Takai is giving the military services 120 days to migrate their current email infrastructure to enterprise systems, Federal News Radio reported.
The directive came in a Sept. 5 memo. The mandate is part of a larger push to rollout the Joint Information Environment’s common department-wide services.
The Army, which played an integral role in helping the Defense Information Systems Agency develop the enterprise email service, is its largest user and finished migrating its 1.5 million users last month. The Navy and Marine Corps, however, have expressed reluctance, stating the current Navy-Marine Corps Intranet provides more capability for lower costs.
The email enterprise currently has the capacity to serve 4.5 million users, according to Lt. Gen. Ronnie Hawkins, DISA director. “What I was told to do was to build out the architecture, and I’ve given the thumbs-up and said we’re ready to go,” Hawkins said.
