Cassidian unveils multifunctional jammer to counter IEDs

Cassidian has introduced a multifunctional jammer that can explore the electromagnetic spectrum, while simultaneously countering radio-controlled improvised explosive devices, the company said March 8.

The jammer analyses the signal spectrum around a vehicle and, through that process, is able to jam the radio signals intended to set off a roadside bomb in a targeted manner, the defense and security division of EADS said.

Coupled with an extension known as SMARTscout, the device can furnish signal intelligence that gives soldiers a comprehensive picture of the signal situation, the company said. The device enables the user to deploy numerous sensors in a crisis area at low cost and to obtain information on the radio communication situation in a short amount of  time.

The multifunctional jammer uses what the company refers to as Smart Responsive Jamming Technology to substantially enhance the level of protection. This system detects and classifies radio signals intended to ignite IEDs. It then transmits jamming signals in real-time, which are tailored exactly to the hostile frequency band.

New digital receiver and signal processing technologies make it possible to achieve reaction times of well below a millisecond, the company said.
