L-3, Virginia Tech partner on cybersecurity center

L-3 has established a National Security Solutions Center at the Virginia Tech Research Center in Arlington, Va., designed to enhance the partnership and collaboration between the company and the university in the joint development of cybersecurity solutions for military and government applications, the company said Oct. 5.

L-3's National Security Solutions Group will operate the National Security Solutions Center.

The arrangement gives L-3 cyber professionals direct access to Virginia Tech labs, technical equipment and development tools. The company's cyber experts will collaborate with Virginia Tech's academic and research staff to create customized cyber solutions that enhance the ability of L-3's customers to secure networks against exploitation and attack.

The agreement provides that L-3 receive exclusive licensing rights to the products and services developed jointly by L-3 and Virginia Tech.

For Virginia Tech, the arrangement will enable its faculty and graduate research students to apply their knowledge and expertise in practical applications that strengthen national security, university officials said.

The National Security Solutions Center also will serve as a platform for prototype demonstrations, operational capabilities, customized solutions and accelerated technology transfer to customers. The center's areas of focus are:

  • Securing communications across inherently insecure media, such as wireless networks and the Internet.
  • Securing computation in inherently insecure environments, such as virtualization and cloud computing.
  • The detection, attribution and mitigation of cyber threats.
  • Developing innovative mobile device security solutions.

The L-3 National Security Solutions Center, which has several labs, will employ about 70 cybersecurity professionals.
