Throwable robot able to peer into the dark

ReconRobotics has been awarded a $13.9 million contract for 1,100 Recon Scout XT micro-robot kits from the Army Contracting Command on behalf of the Army Rapid Equipping Force, the company said.

This is the largest order in the company’s history, and it had also gotten two orders for accessories for nearly $1 million from the Rapid Equipping Force, the company said.

The robot is well suited for military and police operations because the entire system, the robot and handheld operator control unit, weighs three pounds, the robot can be deployed in five seconds and can be thrown up to 120 feet, ReconRobotics said. The robot also has an infrared optical system that allows operators to explore environments in darkness, the company also said.
