DOD Web sites scheduled for upgrade

Omnitec Solutions Inc. will provide software solutions and other support to the Defense Department under a four-year, $37 million contract.

The award from the Defense Media Activity calls for the veteran- and minority-owned business to provide software development, new media integration, maintenance and management support for Defense Department public Web sites.

Under the contract, Omnitec Solutions will enhance the capabilities of the secretary of defense, service secretaries, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and other military leaders to communicate messages, disseminate command information, improve quality of life and morale, and thereby sustain DOD readiness.

The support includes continued development of www.navy.mil, www.af.mil, www.pentagonchannel.mil and other DOD Public Affairs Web sites. It also covers the Web-based content management systems originally developed by Omnitec that form the backbone of these systems.

Omnitec Solutions’ work also includes consolidating thousands of DOD public Web properties under a common architecture, and producing substantial cost savings by eliminating redundancies in Web administrative services, hardware and bandwidth.

The contract is one of the largest full and open competitions that the company has won, said Morris Brown, the compamy's president and chief executive officer.

“While it helps the company to be more competitive, it also gives us an opportunity to help more clients that are struggling with Web 2.0 issues and new media,” he added.

“We are taking thousands of disparate websites and putting them under a common architecture,” Brown said.

“For each Web site you need someone to manage it, update it and maintain. We can consolidate these efforts, have it done centrally, provide the redundancy and the backup for these sites and also reduce costs,” he said.

Brown said Omnitec will definitely try to use the contract win as a selling point with other federal agencies that need help managing their Web sites.
