OMB's Lew to take over as White House chief of staff

Office of Management and Budget Director Jacob “Jack” Lew is expected to take over as White House Chief of Staff, following the anticipated resignation of William Daley from that position.

President Barack Obama announced the change on Jan. 9. The official shift is expected to take place at the end of the month, following the preparations for the State of the Union address and the preparation of the fiscal 2013 budget submission to Congress.

Daley, a former Secretary of Commerce in the Clinton administration, has been serving as chief of staff since January 2011, when he replaced Rahm Emanuel.

Lew was confirmed as OMB director in November 2010, after previously serving in that position from 1998 to 2001 under President Clinton.

He also previously served in the Clinton administration as deputy Secretary of State for Management and Resources, and as chief operating officer. From 1979 to 1987 he was a principal domestic policy advisor to House Speaker Thomas “Tip” O’Neill Jr.

Lew has held positions in the private sector including at Citi Global Wealth Management and at New York University.
