NYC gets its first Chief Digital Officer

New York City has its first Chief Digital Officer. Mayor Michael Bloomberg has appointed Rachel Sterne, 27, in the newly-created position to advise on digital media, social media and Web 2.0, ClickZ News reported today.

"Excited to share my new role with the city," Sterne wrote on Twitter today.

Sterne is the founder of the GroundReport citizen journalism website and an adjunct professor of social media and etrepreneurship at Columbia Business School.

“Rachel is someone who has been an influencer in the social media sphere and a civic journalism entrepreneur. She will be a terrific advocate for digital media while at the same time helping to hone the City’s use of social media for years to come,” Katherine Oliver, the mayor’s commissioner of media and entertainment, said in a statement published today by CapitalNewYork.com.

City officials posted a job description for the new position about six months ago. The salary posted was $75,000 to $125,000 per year.
