Mine-seeking drone sub tested in Persian Gulf exercise

The U.S. Navy's 5th Fleet based in Bahrain has tested a prototype of an unmanned underwater vehicle designed to detect mines in the course of a multinational naval exercise in the Persian Gulf, reports the Associated Press.
VADM John Miller told reporters that the sonar-equipped Kingfish UUV was used for the first time internationally during the maneuvers of more than 30 nations.
The UUV was tested as part of the International Mine Countermeasures Exercise 2012. The two-week long exercise, which concluded on Sept. 27, consisted of various seminars and training operations, according to U.S. Naval Forces Central Command's website.
Miller said that the Kingfish might eventually be deployed with the 5th Fleet and with other U.S. naval forces.
